Lemon Tea And CVD: A Bittersweet Delight
Has anyone brewed a cup of tea and, no matter the flavor, cut a slice of lemon and slipped it into the steaming water? Perhaps it's out of habit, or maybe just for the extra zesty, tangy flavor. Regardless, it makes you wonder — just how healthy is it? Is lemon tea beneficial to one’s cardiovascular health?
Start boiling some water while we delve into this topic.
Lemons have a variety of documented health benefits. According to the article, Health and Medicinal Properties of Lemon (Citrus Limonum) by Mohanapriya, Ramaswamy, and Rajendran. Lemon itself is especially useful for preventing scurvy, supporting skincare, digestion, and respiratory health, to name just a few (Mohanapriya, Ramaswamy and Rajendran, 2013). However, while lemons are good for one’s general health, heart disease does fall into that fold as well because it is listed on another list of benefits in how it “helps cure arthritis, rheumatism, prostate and colon cancer, cholera, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, fatigue, heart diseases, and even very high fever (in contrast to popular belief). The best part of it is that it has no side effects” (Mohanapriya, Ramaswamy and Rajendran, 2013). But what about lemon tea specifically?
While peer-reviewed research specifically connecting lemon tea to heart health is limited, I did find some popular sources on the topic. For example, this next source is from a health insurance blog. Regardless, the health themes of the fruit from the original journal source continue, and it seems the fruit largely retains its natural benefits even in tea form. The article, 10 Health Benefits of Drinking Lemon Tea describes how it strengthens immunity, hydrates the body, supports digestion, weight management and helps to cure sore throats and migraines while also supporting cardiovascular health. It does this in how the “Flavonoids present in” the “tea are known to reduce levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and improve blood vessel function,” (https://www.hdfcergo.com, 2025). Furthermore, this type of tea is known to increase metabolism and energy and support weight loss, which are all beneficial for maintaining one's cardiovascular health.
Personally, I found the tea beneficial for maintaining and improving my cardiovascular health, and I enjoy a cup in the morning with a dollop of local honey to add a little extra sweetness. So, in my experience, this tea makes every morning just a little brighter.
However, it is worth noting that even though I recommend this type of tea it is essential that you consult your doctor before making changes to your diet, especially if you have CVD. Your heart will thank you for it.
We have seen that lemon tea is healthy in many respects and can be a welcome addition to one’s tea cabinet, especially if they have CVD. Think of it as an extra little shield around your heart, protecting it and you from harm with each steaming brew.
What do you think? Do you like lemon tea, or do you have another favorite?
